GRIP — Greenhouse Gas Reduction through Industrial Production of the Rotation Heat Pump
The GRIP project will establish Europe’s first serial production facility for the Rotation Heat Pump (RHP) in Traiskirchen, Austria. This new generation of heat pumps adopts a fundamentally new technology: using a noble-gas Joule cycle in a rotating machine, it delivers industrial process heat of up to 200 °C entirely without refrigerants or F-gases, with up to 50% higher efficiency than conventional heat pumps. At full capacity, the factory will produce 100 RHP units per year, manufactured using two advanced processes: Microchannel Diffusion Bonding and Electrochemical Machining. These will be applied at commercial scale for the first time in the heat pump industry. By replacing fossil-fired boilers in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and paper, the heat pumps produced under GRIP will avoid more than 330,000 tonnes of CO₂e per year at full deployment. This is equivalent to approximately 2.59 million tonnes over the first ten years of operation. GRIP thereby contributes directly to the decarbonisation of European industrial heat and to the EU objective of climate neutrality by 2050.
